History of Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is believed to be associated with ancient Roman pagan festivals for spring and fertility. These festivals date back to 133-31 BC. In this celebration, the god of agriculture, Saturn is worshiped. That is why it is called Saturnalia. The Romans held this week-long festival in mid-December, before planting winter crops.

Finally, in 1699, French explorers brought this ancient Roman festival, known as Mardi Gras, to Louisiana. Gradually, in the 19th century, Mardi Gras became a major festival throughout the United States.

Meaning of Mardi Gras colors

Mardi Gras is a celebration with colorful decorations, costumes, masks and snacks. All these colors are summarized in three colors: purple, green and gold. So, what do these colors mean:

Mardi Gras purple color:

It is always believed that purple is a royal color. Because in the past, this color was difficult to obtain. So it was an expensive color that only served the kings. But in Mardi Gras, purple represents justice.

Green is the color of nature. So it also conveys the peace and security of nature. In Mardi Gras, this color represents faith. In addition, beads in this celebration are given to people who have this attribute (i.e. faith).

Why are Mardi Gras colors purple, green and gold?

The origin of Mardi Gras is known as New Orleans because the first use of the three colors purple, green and gold appeared in this place.

In fact, these colors appeared during the celebration in 1872 for a show in honor of the visit of Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich Romanoff to Russia in New Orleans.

The reason for choosing these three colors for the show was that purple is the royal color, gold is the color of kings and green is the only admirable color of purple.

However, the history behind these colors is still a mystery. But whatever the history, these three colors remained as Mardi Gras colors.
