Successful Painting: The Art Of Using Colors

Painter's desk consists of painting equipment

Before you become a professional in painting, I ask you to close your eyes for a moment and imagine a dark world!

How do you feel?

It is possible to see anything in the light.  This possibility is accompanied by observing and understanding color.

The concept of color in art is that objects reflect part of the light that is shone on them and absorb another part.

Therefore, it is impossible to imagine life without light and color because it is the color that gives life to life. Color is a very important element in all arts.

In the following, you will read about the use and effect of color in the art of drawing.

Get ready to dive!

Color wheel:

If you’ve read my previous articles, you know how much I emphasize learning the color wheel and mastering it.

The basis of the correct use of color in any art is complete learning and mastery of the color wheel.

Color in painting:

Colors can convey a message, express emotions and show emotions in a drawing. Colors have different psychological effects and because of this difference, they have different effects on us.

After recognizing these influences, now everything depends on the creativity of the painter.  And drawing is created by creatively combining colors and putting them together by the painter.

You can also apply different techniques depending on what tool you intend to use to draw and paint.

For example, in oil painting, acrylic and watercolor are in the field of wet paintings, which usually need a substrate and the color combination is easier in them.

Conversely, paintings with pens and crayons are in the realm of dry painting, and the color combination in them is also different and more difficult.

Three distinctive characteristics of color are: hue, saturation and tonality.

Tone in painting:

Saturation and tone are more important in painting than anything else, even the color itself.

Increasing the amount of these two characteristics is troublesome for painters because it causes more color to be displayed in the drawing.

Each color has different tones. Light colors have more limited tones than darker colors.  You should note that the amount of tone of a color also depends on the environment around it, for example, one color may be displayed in a light background with a certain tone if it is displayed in a dark background with another tone.

This is why choosing the right background and the right tone creates a harmony of painting colors.

To create different tones, painters use different shades of oil to paint with oil paint and use water to create this tonnage for watercolor painting.

The importance of creating tonnages of each color is so great that if a draw at first glance, it would not be appropriate.  You can edit the draw by changing and increasing or decreasing the tonnages of colors in the draw instead of changing the colors themselves.

Some painters start the painting with highlighting, some using dark tones.  At the end of the painting, you should check and make sure that there is the darkest tone and the lightest tone among the painting colors or not?

If not, then your painting is not finished yet.

Contrast in painting:

The use of contrast makes for impressive and extraordinary paintings.

If you keep using a consistent level of contrast in your painting, you will end up with a painting with darker sections.  Be sure to move from the darkest color to the lightest to show the colors well in your painting.

Forward to a successful painting!

Draw the tonality after selecting the subject and preparing your painting tools and equipment.

To draw the tonality, look at the subject with your eyes half open, so that you do not see the colors, only recognize the darkness and lightness of the different parts.  Then paint from the darkest tone to the lightest tone.  If you have tonality, you will have a good painting.

Now it’s time to use paint. Paint again from the darkest tone to the lightest. Make sure that each color you choose has tones similar to the underlying colors. Use colors sparingly, do not use any color, remember the color cycle again and pay attention to the combination and relationship of the colors you have used.

Take a deep breath…

Finally, balance the colors and tones of your painting.

Your painting is done!

Conclusion

Color is an integral part of our paintings.  Without color, nothing is meaningless.

In painting, in addition to color, you should pay attention to tones and shadows.

This way you can create masterpiece paintings.

You can be the next Van Gogh or Frida!
